The PMP® Exam Format was Updated on August 31, 2011

With the PMP® exam updated as of August 31st, we've noticed a lot of mis-information by course providers looking to capitalize on student anxiety. In a nutshell, students should notbe panicking about the minor adjustments to the PMP® exam.

Has the PMBOK® Guide changed?

No. The PMBOK® Guide - Fourth Edition (2008) remains the definitive reference text for the PMP® certification. It has not changed, and students will continue to use the PMBOK® Guide to refer back to for all PMP Knowledge Areas and processes.

What significant differences are there with the updated PMP® exam?

The most visible change is in the Professional and Social Responsibility content area, commonly known as "Domain 6". Moving forward, this domain will no longer be a standalone testing area. Rather, Professional and Social Responsibility will now be tested across every domain.

Have there been changes to the number of questions, the application process, or the passing score?

No. No other items have been changed with regard to the exam. The eligibility requirements, application process, score reports, number of questions, and passing requirements all remain the same.
  • There continue to be 200 total multiple choice questions which make up the PMP® exam.
  • 25 randomly placed "pre-test questions" are included, and do not count towards the pass/fail determination.
  • Individuals have 4 hours to complete the exam.
  • Individuals must score 61% or higher to pass the exam (106 of 175 questions)
